Book: Bad Twin
Author: Gary Troup
If you don’t know, this book is a tie-in to the show LOST. The characters read the book on the show, and the book itself has all sorts of wink-wink type nods to the show. Unfortunately you don’t really learn anything critical about the show, and in fact I’ve heard the writers of the show hate the book and aren’t considering it to be cannon.
Which, after reading Bad Twin, I don’t blame them. It’s a cliched and rather trite detective novel that leads you a long for a whole book, before revealing that there a million clues that the detective never discovered and that nothing was what it seemed. It’s one of my biggest pet-peeves. A mystery should give you clues and let you try and work them out yourself. This hit-you-with-the-clues-only-when-we-are-telling-you-the-answer is lazy.
(p.s. if you want a good mystery that’s fun, not-sherlocky and short try “The Westing Game”)
